ÆLAPSE by Smiarx combines two classic effects in a single plugin: a tape-style delay and a reverb inspired by spring reverbs. It’s the only plugin on this list that gives you both a delay and a full-featured reverb engine in one package (Echo1 has a very simple reverb), and either section can be disabled independently if you only need one. The delay section is based on a tape-delay architecture and keeps things relatively simple — delay time, feedback, drive, high-pass and low-pass filters for shaping the repeats, and a Drift parameter that introduces subtle instability to the delayed signal.

That slight unpredictability is perfect for dub-style echoes. The reverb module offers more detailed control. Parameters like Shape, Scatter, Chaos, and Tone let you sculpt the reverb’s character, while Length and Damping control the overall space and decay. Despite being spring-inspired, it isn’t locked into traditional spring sounds. You can push it into more spacious, modern territory if needed. The stereo width control makes it easy to dial in anything from narrow reverbs for guitars and percussion to wide textures for synths.

The design deserves a mention, too. ÆLAPSE is one of the best-looking free plugins I’ve seen recently. It’s clean, clearly laid out, and features an animated spring that reacts to incoming audio.
