SSD Free

If you produce rock, metal, or pop music, SSD Free is probably the first free drum plugin you’ll hear about. Steven Slate Drums has been an industry name for years, and the free edition lives up to that reputation. You get one kit (the “Deluxe 2 Kit”) with three variations, but the sounds are polished and mix-ready. I rarely need to do much processing beyond basic EQ when using SSD Free in a rock project. You also get full control over the microphone mix (direct, overhead, and room channels), the ability to import your own samples, and a library of MIDI grooves organized by genre and song section.

The main limitation is that you get only one kit. If you need jazz brushes or vintage kit tones, you’ll have to look elsewhere on this list. SSD Free also requires a Slate Digital account and their installer, which is more friction than a simple download. But for rock and pop drums that sit well in a mix right away, it’s hard to beat for free.
